Bible Passage: John 12:12–13:15
Memory Verse: John 17:3
Bible Truth
Jesus loved and served others.

Lesson Introduction:
This is a statue of Jesus washing Peter’s feet. Can you imagine how dirty and nasty feet were in the time of Jesus? Their shoes barely covered their feet and it was very sandy and dirty. They didn’t have paved sidewalks to walk on and brand-new sneakers to keep their feet clean How would you like to be in Jesus’ position and wash your friend’s feet? How would you like to be in the disciple’s position instead?

Watch Joel’s video, and then continue below!

Discuss these questions together as a family:

What problem was Joel trying to solve?

What was the answer to the problem?

What are some of the ways Joel tried to solve the problem?

Whose example did Joel finally learn from?

What can we learn from Jesus’ example of serving others?

As a family, read John 12:12-13:5. The story said that the people were shouting ‘Hosanna’ as Jesus came into town.

Let’s see if we can find the word ‘Hosanna’ in your Bible. It should be in John 12:13. (Invite children to put their finger on the word “Hosanna” when they find it and ask a volunteer to read the verse). The word Hosanna actually means ‘save now,’ so if your Bible doesn’t use the word Hosanna, it probably uses a different word that means save now or even praise God because the people were excited and praising God that their Savior had come, even though they didn’t know exactly what that meant yet. In John 13, just a few days later, we see that Jesus loved His disciples. He showed them just how much He loved them by serving them. How can you follow Jesus’s example and serve others?

Use these questions for more Bible study together as a family!

  1. Why was a crowd gathered in the city of Jerusalem? (To celebrate the Passover, John 12:12)
  2. What did the people take as they met Jesus on the road? (Palm branches, John 12:13)
  3. What did the people shout as He entered the city? (Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” John 12:13)
  4. Who was upset that people were following Jesus? (The religious leaders, John 12:19)
  5. Who questioned Jesus about washing his feet? (Peter, John 13:6)
  6. What names did Jesus say the disciples called Jesus? (Teacher and Lord, John 13:13)
  7. According to Jesus, why should the disciples continue to wash each other’s feet? (Because He had given them an example to follow, John 13:15)
