Bible Truth
Jesus is our great High Priest—He paid for our sin, once and for all.

Lesson Introduction:
This is a picture of what a temple, altar and high priest would look like. The temple was the place where people worshiped. The altar is where sacrifices were made. Before Jesus came, sacrifices had to be made so that people could be forgiven of their sins. The high priest was a person who made sacrifices for people. He was the only person who could go into the most holy place in the temple, the holy of holies, and offer sacrifices for himself and for the people. Today we are looking in the book of Hebrews. The Book of Hebrews helps us understand that we need a Savior. The price of sin can’t be paid with money, kind thoughts, or manners. Sin cannot be erased with good deeds. Sin has consequences. Jesus paid the price for our sin problem.

Watch Joel’s video, and then continue below!

Discuss these questions together as a family:

What was Joel trying to accomplish?

How did Joel bridge the gap for his cars?

What greater gap do we need to have a bridge for? (The gap between God and us created by our sin.)

How did Jesus bridge the gap for us?

As a family, read Hebrews 5:1-6 and talk about all of the ways that Jesus is so much better than having a human high priest.

Finish the study together with prayer. Use this time to talk about what might be making you sad right now, or scared or angry. Show your children how when we are feeling those things we can go to God in prayer. Pray together and ask God to help each person with the feelings they talked about.

Use these questions for more Bible study together as a family!

  1. What city did Jeremiah lament about? (Jerusalem, Lamentations 1:7)
  2. What happened to the temple when the people of Jerusalem did not repent? (It was destroyed, Lamentations 2:6)
  3. Why did Jeremiah say he and God’s people did not perish? (Because of God’s faithful love, Lamentations 3:22)
  4. How often are God’s mercies new? (Every morning, Lamentations 3:22-23)
  5. Who did Jeremiah choose to put his hope in? (God, Lamentations 3:24)
  6. Even when God allows people to experience suffering, what does He also show His people? (His compassion because of His faithful love, Lamentations 3:32)
  7. What is Jeremiah’s ask God to do to help bring joy back to their hearts? (“Lord, bring us back to you.” Lamentations 5:21)

This is a great time to talk to your children about salvation. As parents, it may feel strange to ask your children what they believe-but be brave, it’s important! Remember to keep it age appropriate and you can start with a few simple questions:

What is sin? (They may answer something like-“When I do bad things”)
Do you ever sin? (If they are young and answer no-it’s ok-they may not be ready! If they answer yes-continue)
How do you get forgiveness from God for your sin? (The only way is through Jesus)

If your child has never prayed to receive Jesus, ask them if they want to ask God to be with them forever and help them to do the right thing even when it’s hard. If they answer yes you can lead them in a prayer for salvation. Explain that these are not magic words. Just like when you say sorry to someone-you have to mean it with your whole heart. When we pray to be saved, it doesn’t mean that we become perfect. That’s not what God expects. It does mean that we look to Jesus as our example of how we are trying to be!

Here is an example:

Dear God,
I know I am a sinner and make bad choices. I ask for your forgiveness and to be my Savior. Thank you Jesus for dying on the cross for my sins and giving me eternal life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Did your child pray that prayer for the first time? I would love to hear from you at
