Bible Passage: Hebrews 11
Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:6
Bible Truth
We can live by faith.

Show the picture of the universe to your child and ask them what makes up the universe. Explain: Absolutely everything that has ever existed, and been created is part of the universe, and every single thing that is part of the universe has been created by God. How can we even understand how God created the universe? Hebrews tells us that it is by faith that we understand God created the universe.

Lesson Introduction:
This week we are learning about the “Hall of Faith!” Just like we use a Hall of Fame to recognize people who were great at something….like football or music….this chapter of Hebrews contains a list of people who had great faith in God. Chapter 11 Hebrews is typically known to us as the faith chapter. It is given this title for good reason since the word faith occurs 24 times in the text. The writer of Hebrews defined the word so the readers would know what he meant. “Faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.” Basically, faith is knowing that God will do what He says He will do based on His track record. Nowhere in Scripture do we ever find God going back on His word. God is always faithful, and because of His faithfulness, we can live by faith.

Watch Joel’s video, and then continue below!

Discuss these questions together as a family:

Where did Joel visit?
What two hall of fames did Joel learn about? (agriculture and Hebrews 11 Hall of Faith)
What are some ways we can live by faith?

Read Hebrews 11 together as a family. If you have younger children who are struggling to pay attention or understand, try telling the Bible story in your own words.

The entire 11th chapter of Hebrews is a beautiful story of many people of the Old Testament who had faith. Most verses start with ‘By faith’ (this person did something). You can see a pattern. Each person had faith in God and they obeyed God because of their faith. It wasn’t just about having faith, but the focus was also on what the faith produced.

Reread Hebrews 11:7 and discuss the following questions:
Who was mentioned in this verse? (Noah)
What was Noah warned about? (what was not yet seen)
What happened because of Noah’s faith? (He became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.)

Noah’s story is a perfect example of faith in action. His faith led him to obey. Noah had to act, even when others thought he was wrong or crazy.

Use these questions for more Bible study together as a family!

  1. Why did Abraham have to have faith when he moved his family? (He didn’t know where they were going to live yet, Hebrews 11:8)
  2. Whose parents hid him for three months? (Moses’, Hebrews 11:23)
  3. Whose faith led them across the Red Sea as if it were dry ground? (The Israelites’, Hebrews 11:29)
  4. What happened when the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho in faith? (The walls fell down, Hebrews 11:30)
  5. Did only good things happen to people because of their faith? (No, some people were mistreated and even killed because of their faith, Hebrews 11:35-38)
