In 1983, U2 ran out of studio time and needed one more song to finish an album, so Bono opened his Bible to Psalm 40 and turned it into lyrics on the spot—it became one of rock's most iconic sing-along moments, with crowds still chanting the refrain long after the band left the stage. So what should our songs actually be about? Not vague spirituality, not our own feelings, and not moral self-improvement, but the real good news of Jesus Christ. Psalm 40 points to 3 aspects of our salvation worth singing about: what Jesus has already done for us, what he's doing in us right now, and what he will do when he returns.

In the movie Elf, Buddy gets caught singing loudly in the middle of a department store and insists, "We sing all the time—especially when we make toys!" Many of us carry our gratitude to God quietly instead of giving it voice. But Psalm 147 says it's good, pleasant, and fitting to sing praise to the Lord, and it lists at least 10 occasions worth singing about—from God growing his church and healing a broken heart, to answering an honest prayer, providing when money is tight, and simply opening his Word. Chances are good that at least one of them happened to you sometime in the last month.
