We have all had speaker’s remorse. We said something in anger, frustration, fear, or foolishness—and wished we could take it back as soon as it left our mouths. Words are small, but they can set the direction of a marriage, a friendship, a family, a church, and even our relationship with God. A harsh word can open an old wound. A careless comment can create conflict that lasts for years. On the other hand, a timely and loving word can encourage a discouraged soul, strengthen a relationship, and point someone to Christ. James 3:1-12 gives us five reasons to speak carefully so that our words increasingly bring life rather than death.
